J H Watson Ltd. is proudly run by Robbie, Sandra and Annie, a close-knit team of horse owners who understand the deep bond between horse and human.

Robert Watson’s connection to J.H. Watson & Sons began in his school days, though it was clear early on that his heart belonged to the land. At just fourteen, he left school and stepped fully into farm life, helping wherever he could and quickly becoming part of the team.
He mastered the art of machinery early—driving tractors, cars and lorries and just as easily taking them apart and putting them back together. His days were filled tending to the dairy herd, repairing fences and caring for the land. Harvest season saw him behind the wheel of a combine or anything else with a steering wheel, always in motion, always contributing.
As the business evolved, so did Robert’s role. He became the main yard person, overseeing the cremation of horses and the respectful disposal of livestock.
Years of working with open-roof tractors took a toll on his hearing, prompting a shift in his duties. Though he stepped back from regular collections, his skill with pulleys and levers meant he was still called upon for the most challenging recoveries—those requiring ingenuity and strength when animals had passed in difficult locations. Today, with the help of earphones, he continues to serve with quiet dedication.
Now enjoying a gentler pace, Robert focuses on individual horse collections and private cremations, while supporting his wife in managing her yard and fields. His legacy is one of steadfast service, mechanical mastery and a deep, enduring connection to the land and animals he’s cared for all his life.

I’ve been around horses for as long as I can remember. As a child, I spent my days helping at Wendy Bland’s Kiln Farm in North Baddesley—sweeping yards, filling haynets and soaking up everything I could. At eleven, I got my first horse, Diana and that was it. Horses became my whole world. One horse quickly became three and today I care for thirteen of my own. I’ve never been without a horse and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Over the years, I competed in show jumping and cross-country, but it was training young horses that truly stole my heart. I brought home several from Builth Wells with the intention of selling them on—but after spending so much time with them, I couldn’t bear to let them go. They stayed and they’re still with me.
Having used JH Watson three times while growing up, I experienced first hand the emotional weight of losing a horse. Those moments shaped my commitment to making every farewell as kind and dignified as possible. When I joined J.H Watson in 2016 and later married Robert Watson, I was able to bring that vision to life—especially after we moved to our new premises.
Today, alongside Annie and Robbie, I run a busy livery yard that includes a retirement herd and a youngstock herd—altogether just over 50 horses. It’s not just a job; it’s a way of life. I care deeply about fairness, transparency and making sure every horse and owner feels supported. Whether it’s a quiet retirement, a young horse finding its feet, or guiding a beloved companion through their final journey, I’m here for every step.

My love for horses began when I fell for a palomino mare named Peanuts in my grandmother’s neighbour’s garden. At age 7, my family moved from Wales to Hampshire, where I began riding at HMS Dryad and soon after got my first pony, Oscar.
I spent my childhood competing in pony club events—showing, jumping and simply enjoying life with my ponies. As an adult, my passion evolved into dressage and schooling. It was always my dream to breed my own horse and in 2022, with the help of Sandra’s stallion Marti, my mare Luna gave birth to Otis. In 2024, Luna had another foal, Diana, named with love after Sandra’s first pony. I sadly lost Luna in April 2025, but I’m blessed to have her two foals and my gentle cob, Murray.
I joined J.H Watsons in 2023. Many horse friends ask how I do this job when I love horses so deeply. The answer is simple: while it’s heartbreaking when someone has to say goodbye to their beloved companion, I feel honoured that they trust us to guide their horse’s final journey with dignity, compassion and heartfelt empathy.
